TOGETHER we mounted the vermilion steps,
Each in our different grades and limited by the purple wei.
In the morning we followed the maces of office (into the Palace);
In the evening we came home permeated by the imperial incense.
Now, white-haired, I lament the falling of the flowers,
But I watch you with pride soaring like a bird in the azure skies,
And as the holy court is without fault or flaw, so I find my memorials are few and far between.
Together we officials climbed vermilion steps, To be parted by the purple walls ... Our procession, which entered the palace at dawn, Leaves fragrant now at dusk with imperial incense. ... Grey heads may grieve for a fallen flower, Or blue clouds envy a lilting bird; But this reign is of heaven, nothing goes wrong, There have been almost no petitions. Walking humbly in step we mount the vermilion stairs, Left or right according to office, crape myrtle flowers between us. In the morning we go in with the emperor’s guard, In the evening imperial incense wafts us home. With my white hair I am sad to see the flowers fall And envy the birds flying up to the blue sky. Our glorious dynasty leaves little undone; It seems to me censors have few memorials to write. |

二人つれだって歩いて、宮中の赤く塗った階段を、ともに小走りに登る身であるが、役所の部局を異にしておたがいに宮中の場所を限られて別々に勤務している。夜明けに儀仗兵の後に従って宮中に入り、夕方に宮中でたきこめる香を身に帯びて帰るのが、二人の日常である。
白髪のわが身は、花の散り落ちるのを悲しく思い、高い空を見ては、飛ぶ鳥のごとき君の姿をうらやましく思う。今の聖天子の朝廷には、政治上の欠陥は全くなく、天子をお諫めする上書もほとんどさし上げていないということを、自分自身よく心得ているのだ。
