I come of a good family,
And have served in many campaigns.
The marshal’s ambition increases my anxiety,
It would be vain to think of promotion.
Twenty years I've been in the saddle,
Fearing naught but that I might be unworthy of imperial grace.
Now I see rebel horsemen driving deep into our domain,
I can do nothing except make my escape at night.
Taking a byway, I return to my native village,
Only to find it deserted.
My name is unsullied,
But I shall be alone till the end of my days.
