I am a peach tree blossoming in a deep pit.
Who is there I may turn to and smile?
You are the moon up in the far sky;
Passing, $(you looked down on me an hour;)$ then went
on forever.
A sword with the keenest edge,
Could not cut the stream of water in twain
So that it would cease to flow.
My thought is like the stream; and flows and follows
you on forever.
To cleave a running stream with a sword, The water will never be severed. My thoughts that follow you in your wanderings Are as interminable as the stream. Since we parted, the grass before our gate In the autumn lane has turned green in spring. I sweep it away but it grows back, Densely it covers your footprints. The singing phoenixes were happy together; Startled, the male and the female each flies away. On which mountaintop have the drifting clouds stayed? Once gone, they never are seen to return. From a merchant traveling to Ta-lou, I learn you are there at Autumn Cove. In the Liang Garden I sleep in an empty embroidered bed; On the Yang Terrace you dream of the drifting rain. Three times my family has produced a prime minister; Then moved to west Ch'in since our decline. We still have our old flutes and songs, Their sad notes heard everywhere by neighbors. When the music rises to the purple clouds, I cry for the absence of my beloved. I am like a peach tree at the bottom of a well, For whom will the blossoms smile? You are like the moon high in the sky, Unwilling to cast your light on me. I cannot recognize myself when I look in the mirror, I must have grown thin since you left home. If only I could own the fabled parrot To tell you of the feelings in my heart! |
