You have a yellow horse,
Mine is white.
The colours are not the same,
But our hearts are united.
Together we wandered through the outskirts,
Two young blades of Loyang stepping side by side.
Our long jeweled swords dazzled in the sun,
Scarlet were our high head-dresses.
Each wore furs worth a thousand pieces of gold.
Each were the guests of five orders of princes.
You, the fierce tiger, have fallen into the trap.
The brave man submits to bitter fate,
But when you, my comrade, are in such distress,
What avails it if I alone am happy?
You had a yellow steed, Mine was white. Their colors differed, Our hearts were one. We two gay blades of Lo-yang, Rode the city street, side by side, Flaunting our high head-gears gallantly, Our long swords glancing in the sun. Each had a fur coat on, worth a thousand guilders; Both were guests of the five princes. Now you have fallen as a tiger falls in a trap-hole; And suffer miserably as strong men must sometimes. But when you, my comrade, are so distressed, What avails me if I alone can flourish? |
