In the distance I can hear
a dog barking
and the sound of fast water
rain-flled peach blossoms
shower me as I walk
sometimes, deep in the trees,
I glimpse a stag
standing by a creek at noon
I can't hear
a single bell
overhead the wild bamboos
divide a cloud-blue sky
a flying spring
hangs a white plume
from a jade-green peak
he's gone, they don't know where
I lean my grief
on two or three pines
and walk away
A dog barks amid the sound of water; Peach blossoms tinged by dew take on a deeper tone. In the dense woods at times I see deer; But the brook I hear no bells at noon. Wild bamboos divide the blue haze; Tumbling waterfalls hang from the green cliff. No one can tell me where you are, Saddened, I lean against the pines. A dog barks afar where the waters croon. The peach flowers are deeper-tinted, wet with rain. The wood is so thick that one espies a deer at times, But cannot hear the noon bell in this lonely glen. The wild bamboos sway in the blue mist, And on the green mountainside flying cascades glisten What way has he gone? There is none to tell; Sadly I lean against a pine tree here and there. Where the dogs bark by roaring waters, Whose spray darkens the petals' colours, Deep in the woods deer at times are seen; The valley moon: one can hear no bell, But wild bamboos cut across bright clouds, Flying cascades hang from jasper peaks; No one here knows which way you have gone: Two, now three pines I have leant against! |
