If Heaven itself did not love wine, Then no Wine Star would shine in the sky. And if Earth also did not love wine, Earth would have no such place as Wine Fountain. 0 0 Have I not heard that pure wine makes a sage, And even muddy wine can make a man wise? If wise men and sages are already drinkers What is the use of seeking god and fairies? With three cups I understand the great Way With one jar I am at one with Nature. Only, the perceptions that one has while drunk Cannot be transmitted after one is sober.
If Heaven weren't fond of wine Wine Star would not be found in Heaven. If Earth weren't fond of wine There could be no Wine Spring on earth. Since Heaven and Earth are fond of wine, In Heaven being fond of wine can't be judged wrong. Clear wine, I've heard, is compared to sages, Also the unstrained wine spoken of as worthies. Since I've drunk both sages and worthies Why must I seek out the immortals? Three cups penetrate the Great Truth; One gallon accords with Nature's laws. Simply find pleasure in wine: Speak not of it to the sober ones.
IF High Heaven had no love for wine, There would not be a Wine Star in the sky. If Earth herself had no love for wine, There would not be a city called Wine Springs. Since Heaven and Earth both love wine, I can love wine, without shame before God. Clear wine was once called a Saint Thick wine was once called a Sage. Of Saint and Sage I have long quaffed deep, What need for me to study spirits and hsien? At the third cup I penetrate the Great Way; A full gallon—Nature and I are one ... But the things I feel when wine possesses my soul I will never tell to those who are not drunk.
IF Heaven did not love wine, There would be no Wine Star in Heaven. If Earth did not love wine, There should be no Wine Springs on Earth. 0 Why then be ashamed before Heaven to love wine. I have heard that clear wine is like the Sages; Again it is said that thick wine is like the Virtuous Worthies. Wherefore it appears that we have swallowed both Sages and Worthies. Why should we strive to be Gods and Immortals? Three cups, and one can perfectly understand the Great Tao; A gallon, and one is in accord with all nature. Only those in the midst of it can fully comprehend the joys of wine; I do not proclaim them to the sober.
