No waves on the sandspit, no mist on the islands
As one thinks of the tragedy of the guest of Ch'u one's thoughts seem yet more far away.
At the mouth of the Han River as the evening sun slants a few birds flight home.
The autumn waters of the Tung T'ing Lake flow away until they meet the sky.
To the lonely city backed by the mountain range comes the cold ring of the hooves of Tartar horses.
Where I moor my boat at evening the lonely outposts over-look the river.
Chia I sent memorials to an Emperor of the house of Han which caused him to be banished to Ch'ang-sha.
Pity for his fate has survived till to-day.
No ripples in the river, no mist on the islands, Yet the landscape is blurred toward my friend in Ch'u ... Birds in the slanting sun cross Han-kou, And the autumn sky mingles with Lake Tung-t'ing. ... From a bleak mountain wall the cold tone of a bugle Reminds me, moored by a ruined fort, That Chia Yi's loyal plea to the House of Han Banned him to Ch'ang-sha, to be an exile. Jia Yi made an earnest appeal to the crown, much concerned about the future of the Han state, For which he was exiled to Changsha, though – How grieved people in after ages were at his fate! |

鸚鵡洲（おうむしゅう）のほとりには、打（う）ち寄（よ）せる波（なみ）もなく、またその上（うえ）に立（た）ちこめるもやもなくて、楚（そ）の地方（ちほう）の旅人（たびびと）であるわたしは、もの思（おも）いにふけって、その思（おも）いはますます尽（つ）きることがない。
漢口（かんこう）にさしている夕日（ゆうひ）の中（なか）を、通（とお）り過（す）ぎて行（い）く鳥（とり）は斜（なな）めに飛（と）んで、洞庭湖（どうていこ）の秋（あき）の水（みず）は、はるかに天（てん）にまで続（つづ）いている。目（め）を転（てん）ずればただ一（ひと）つ漢陽（かんよう）の町（まち）が、山（やま）を背後（はいご）にして見（み）え、そこからは寒々（さむざむ）と角笛（つのぶえ）が吹（ふ）き鳴（な）らされ、ただ一本（いっぽん）の樹（き）が長江（ちょうこう）のほとりに立（た）つあたりに、今夜（こんや）は船（ふね）を停泊（ていはく）させることにした。
思（おも）えば、前漢（ぜんかん）の賈誼（かぎ）は、文帝（ぶんてい）に上奏文（じょうそうぶん）を奉（たてま）って漢五朝（かんごちょう）の前途（ぜんと）を憂（うれ）え、そのためにかえって左遷（させん）されて長沙（ちょうさ）にわび住（す）まいする身（み）となり、昔（むかし）から今（いま）に至（いた）るまでの人々（ひとびと）が、あわれみいたむこととなったのだ。
