Proudly the purple hooded cock-man proclaims the
arrival of dawn.
The Warden of Robes enters accompanying the cloud-
blue imperial furs.
The nine "gates of heaven" swing open on the palace
courts within;
Worshipping officials from the thousand countries kneel
before the imperial insignia.
The first rays of the sun gild the "fairy palms";
Smoke of incense swirls round the dragons writhing on
each royal robe—they seem to float among the clouds.
After the morning levee, you will write the
five-coloured edicts;
Then, to the jingle of jades and gems, go proudly toward
your home at the edge of Phoenix Pool.
THE purple-capped cockman announces the dawn; The Master of the Robes brings in the imperial furs and the kingfisher blue garments; The nine-fold gates open to the audience hall of the palace; The officials of a thousand countries bow to him who wears the many tasselled headdress; The light of the sun strikes upon the Taoist emblems and makes them glitter; The incense swirls round the writhing dragons of the (imperial robes) till they float in mist; The audience over the duty remains of copying out the five coloured edict; Gems jingle returning home along the side of the phœnix pond. AT the first light of the still-concealed sun, the Cock-man, in his dark-red cap, strikes the tally-sticks and pro-claims aloud the hour. At this exact moment, the Keeper of the Robes sends in the eider-duck skin dress, with its cloud-like curving feather-scales of kingfisher green. In the Ninth Heaven, the Ch’ang Ho Gate opens; so do those of the Palaces, and the Halls of Ceremony in the Palaces. The ten thousand kingdoms send their ambassadors in the dresses and caps of their ranks to do reverence before the pearl-stringed head-dress. The immediately-arrived sun tips the “Immortal Palm”; it glitters. Sweet-scented smoke rises and flows about the Emperor’s ceremonial robes, making the dragons writhe. The audience ended, I wish to cut the paper of five colours and write upon it the words of the Son of Heaven. My jade girdle-ornaments clash sweetly as I return to sit beside the Pool of the Crested Love-Pheasant. The red-capped Cock-Man has just announced morning; The Keeper of the Robes brings Jade-Cloud Furs; Heaven's nine doors reveal the palace and its courtyards; And the coats of many countries bow to the Pearl Crown. Sunshine has entered the giants' carven palms; Incense wreathes the Dragon Robe: The audience adjourns—and the five-coloured edict Sets girdle-beads clinking toward the Lake of the Phoenix. The crimson-capped watchman herald the morntide; The wardrobe-keepers send in the kingfisher-cloud gown. Onto the palaces sky-high portals open out wide; Envoys from myriads of states bow down to the crown. The fans spread out just as the aurora descends; Around the dragon robe incense floats higher. To draft the five-coloured edicts, once the levee ends, To Phoenix Pool with pendants tinkling you retire. |

赤色（あかいろ）の頭巾（ずきん）をかぶった鶏人（けいじん）と呼（よ）ばれる役人（やくにん）が、夜明（よあ）けの時刻（じこく）を知（し）らせ、衣服係（いふくがかり）の役人（やくにん）の尚衣（しょうい）が今（いま）まさに天子（てんし）に青雲（せいうん）の模様（もよう）のかわごろもを、お着（き）せしようとしている。九重（きゅうじゅう）の奥（おく）にある大明宮（たいめいきゅう）の表正門（おもてせいもん）とそれに続（つづ）いて、すべての宮殿（きゅうでん）が開（ひら）かれ、各地各国（かくちかっこく）から参集（さんしゅう）した衣冠（いかん）を整（ととの）えた人々は、天子（てんし）に拝礼（はいれい）する。
朝（あさ）の光（ひかり）は、今（いま）しも宮中（きゅうちゅう）にさしこんで承露盤（しょうろばん）の上（うえ）に揺（ゆ）れ動（うご）いており、香（かおり）の煙（けむり）は、竜（りゅう）の刺繡（ししゅう）をした天子（てんし）の衣服（いふく）にまつわって立（た）ち上（のぼ）ろうとしている。朝廷（ちょうてい）の毎朝（まいあさ）の日課（にっか）がやがて滞（とどこお）りなく終（お）わるや、君（きみ）は中書舎人（ちゅうしょしゃじん）として五色（ごしき）の詔書（しょうしょ）を起草（きそう）せねばならない。そこで腰（こし）の帯（お）び玉（ぎょく）の響（ひび）きをたてながら、君（きみ）は鳳凰池（ほうおうち）のほとりの中書省（ちゅうしょしょう）に帰（かえ）ってくるのである。
