The gulls play on the frigid river banks ;
Vainly they live , they please themselves with pranks .
The day was when their snow-white feathers flapped ,
Over the spring seedlings they freely tapped .
When in swarm the swarthy clouds come they must fall ,
Or away along here and there with the squall .
But over the sea there are groups $(making fun)$ ,
While silhouetting against the glowing sun .
