I think of your going to a border town,
Confronting the autumn, lonely and forlorn,
Two years an impoverished censor,
Eight months in ancient Pin-chou.
You may delight in hearing
Reed and string instruments
But those sand-filled winds off the desert
Must be a grievous sorrow to you.
If your heart is harassed
When you look towards your native village,
You had better climb the watch-tower less often.
I think of how you've gone to a border town, confronting the autumn lone-forlorn. Two years a censor in poverty, the eighth month to old Pin-chou. You may delight in hearing reed and string instruments but then too those sandy desert winds must cause you grief. If when you look towards your native village your heart is harassed better to ascend the tower less. |
