Between cool and cold
For three nights in autumn
A tranquil, idle old man
Lies down late.
After the candle is out
He sleeps profoundly
To the sound of rain.
Ashes gather in the fire
That heats the wine-jug.
Fragrance enhances the basket
Warming the coverlets.
I refuse to rise
Even in the clear, cold dawn.
Drifts of red-frosted leaves
Fill the staircase.
Cool cold three autumn night, tranquil idle one old man. Lying down late after the candle is out, sleeping fine midst the sound of rain. Ashes lodge in the fire warming the wine-jug, fragrance adds to the basket warming the coverlets. Clear cold dawn I don't arise— frost red leaves fill the staircase. |
