Once a portrait of a young scholar was painted
And placed in the honorable Assembly of Worthies.
Now the portrait of an old recluse is hung
In the Temple of the Fragrant Mountain.
His black hair now as white as a crane's feathers,
His face changed to the skin of a roasted chicken.
Thirty years separate man and likeness.
Do not sigh that youth
Has suddenly become immortal!
Look at the waters of the Eastern Seas
Which turn at sunset into fields of mulberry!
All things in nature change.
Formerly a young scholar, a depiction was drawn, placed in Assembled Worthies. Now an old recluse, likeness drawn, entrusted to Fragrant Mountain Temple. Black hair converted to hair the color of the crane, face changed to chicken skin. Former depiction, later likeness, separated thirty years. Don't sigh that youth sudden becomes an old immortal— look at the waters of the Eastern Seas; they too change into mulberry fields. All things in nature change. |
