Animals enjoy mountains and valleys, Fish enjoy marshes and ponds, Insects enjoy deep grass, Birds enjoy limbs of high trees. Their pleasures are not alike Yet they're alike in seeking pleasure. They cannot shift from this to that, So why talk of right or wrong? What do I enjoy? I enjoy holding an official post, And should you ask What pleasure lies in officialdom, I reply, it's a pleasure unknown to the common man. High rank carries good pay, But then, idleness brings no anxiety or care. Laziness lies close to the Way, Dullness harmonizes with ease. Yesterday morning I submitted a memorial; This evening I offered incense at a temple, Then returned home, At the north window removed my headdress, Took off dust-laden clothes. A cold stream washes my head; Warm water washes my entire body. Luckily I have no illness. I lie down, trusting in the pure breeze. There's nothing pressing on my heart As I sit, trusting in the morning sunlight. I may open a book to read, I may refill my wine-cup. If I enjoy a few days like today I'll end my days without regret.
Animals enjoy mountains and valleys, fish enjoy marshes and ponds. Insects enjoy the deep grass, birds enjoy the high tree limb. They are not the same in pleasure but the same in reverting to that which accords. They can't change from one to the other so why talk of right or wrong? What do I take pleasure in? In being an official. And if you ask, where's the pleasure in officialdom; I say it's a pleasure unknown to men. High rank carries good pay but idle there's no worry or care. Being lazy is close to the Way, being dull accords well with ease. Yesterday morn I submitted a memorial, this evening I serve incense at a temple. Then come back home, below the north window remove turban, take off those dust-laden clothes. A cold stream washes my head, warmed water washes my four limbs. Luckily no body sickness, lying down entrusted to the pure breeze. Not a thing within my heart, there I sit given to the bright sun's moves. I may open a book to read, I may draw a cup of wine. If I just get days like today I'll end my days without regret.
