I'm too indolent
To go to T'ung-chou,
Yet who can know
My real feelings?
I love a large salary,
But what can one achieve
When body and strength decay?
When a miserable illness
Falls punctually,
What can a man accomplish
But get drunk and sing poems?
There's indeed a distinction
Between labor and idleness,
Between advancing and retiring.
But the urging of others
Does not trouble me.
With deep thought
I've searched myself.
White hair comes on without a limit
But death's blue mountains
Have their date with me.
My rustic heart
Dreads the noise of crowds;
My family has never feared starvation.
I'll sell my home in New Glory Ward,
Using the proceeds to speed old age.
Indolent I don't go to T'ung-chou but who can know my feelings? I really love a large salary but what can you do when body and vigor decay? That sickness sad delivered right on time, what to do but get drunk sing poems? To labor or be idle, between them quite a distance; no doubt if I should advance or retire. I don't bother with the urgings of others, I've thought I've searched it out myself. White hair comes on without limit but death's blue mountains have a date with me. My rustic heart fears the noise of the crowd, my family has no starvation worry. I'll sell my home in New Glory Ward, use the funds to send old age on. |
