On leaving public office
I brush dust from my clothes,
Release a hundred subordinates,
While two cranes follow me home.
I return to my residence in Sandal Route Ward,
Dismount, enter through rustic doors.
The horse neighs and goes back to the stable,
The cranes dance back to the old pond.
How happy are the birds and dogs!
How affectionately we remember our village neighbors!
I left ten years ago. Now old age arrives
But my livelihood is far better than in earlier times.
I have silk for protection against cold of winter,
Grain to offset the year's famine.
My food is more plentiful than Tung-fang Shuo's,
I am happier than Jung Ch'i-chi.
Living in this manner
I am conscious of nothing beyond me.
