I don't seek a splendid mansion
Or a large garden grove,
But I do strive to be my own master,
As for over ten years I have been seated here.
When I look backward, I see mansions lining the capital,
Carmine gates with white walls either side
Confronting each other at stately distances.
Are their masters at home? No, the wealthy and eminent
Go out but do not return.
The pond is made for fish, the forest planted for birds.
What better than to be master of a small garden,
Leaning on a cane, taking life leisurely?
When guests arrive, we have parties
With lute and wine nights on end.
Wholly content with this, I fail to envy
The vast pond and lofty tower.
I don't care about a splendid mansion or strive for a large garden grove, but I do strive to be my own Master, seated here now for more than ten years. Turning back I see mansions lined up within the capital, carmine gates with white walls on both sides, confronting one another in lofty distance. Are their Masters home? No, the wealthy and eminent go out, they don't return. The pond is created for fish, the forest is planted for birds. What better than to be Master of a small garden, leaning on a cane, taking leisure there. When guests arrive a party, lute and wine for nights on end. Perfectly content with this, never do I envy the pond and tower vast in size. |
