Even trifles accord with fate;
My decayed frame
Barely suffices to support my body.
If we compare our struggle for leisure,
A monk would seem the busier.
If we compare our weight,
A crane is still fatter.
On aging, your socks get looser,
On cold days, heavy clothes are worn.
The haltered horse
Munches his grass;
The bird pecks its cage
As it flutters about.
All I desire
Is harmony with nature,
Not resisting the tide of things.
Don't inquire further
Of what is right or wrong.
Trifling things all accord with fate, decayed frame barely suffices the body. In the struggle for leisure a monk is still busier, if we compare weight a crane is still fatter. Old and your socks get looser, cold and it's heavy cotton clothes. The horse in the halter munches the grass, the bird pecks at the cage as it flutters about. All I want is natural harmony, not to go against the way of things. Don't ask about anything else; what is right, what is wrong? |
