Last night I drank too much
So that I became tipsy,
Turning wholly drunk until dawn.
This morning after a full meal
I fell directly into a deep sleep.
After sufficient sleep I rubbed my eyes
For I recognized nothing that I saw;
As I walked about the pond
I suddenly felt utterly alone!
Shadows flickered from green trees;
Patches of green moss covered the earth.
Here I have arranged a rope bed,
My washing utensils beside it,
A white porcelain pot utterly pure,
A red stove with coals flaming hot.
At first beneath bubbles colored as yeast or dust
There breathes a rich aroma.
At length flowers seem floating on water
Bubbling fiercely like the eyes of fish.
What fine color when the dish is cooked!
What splendid fragrance lingers with the taste!
With the exception of Yang Mu-ch'ao,
Who could appreciate its flavor?
Last night I drunk too much, tipsy-turning drunk right till dawn. This morning I had a full meal, went right off into deep sleep. Sleep sufficing, I rubbed my eyes, before them not a thing to be seen. Walking about the pond of a sudden I felt I'd attained the Lone. Flickering shade from the green of the trees, green moss in patches on the earth. Here I have arranged a rope bed, washing tea utensils alongside. White porcelain pot utterly pure, red stove coals flaming hot. Aroma beneath the bubbles, yeast dust color; flowers floating on fish-eyed boiling water. What a fine color when it's done, what a splendid aroma lingers with the taste! Were it not for Yang Mu-ch'ao, who else could appreciate the flavor? |
