The end of the year nears forlornly,
Weather has been dreary for ten days.
Frost and wind bring tears to your face;
Ice and snow crush the carriage wheels.
At such a time I alone
Am neither bitter nor harassed.
At morning there's rice in the bin,
At evening, firewood in the kitchen.
A cap covers both my ears,
Heavy clothes encase me throughout.
Add to this a cup of wine
Conveying the warmth of spring.
Among people of Loyang, high and low,
There's much starvation from door to door.
Where can you find a stove with fire
Or a rice-bin not covered with dust?
Not one in a hundred resembles me,
With a warm house full of food.
How can I help from feeling shame?
So I state my feelings in song.
End of year nears forlorn, dreary weather for ten days. Frost and wind tear at your face, ice and snow crush the carriage wheels. At such a time only I neither bitter nor harassed. Mornings, rice in the bin; evenings, firewood in the kitchen. A cap covers my ears on both sides, heavy clothes encase me throughout. Add to this a cup of wine, conveying to me the warmth of spring. The people of Loyang high and low much poverty starvation door to door. Where is there a stove with fire, where does dust not cover the rice-bin? Like me, well-fed and warm? Not one in a hundred! How can I not feel shame? And so I state my feelings in song. |
