Yesterday and again this very day
When I am seventy, free and at ease,
I pass by many ancient places
That I seem to have encountered in former lives.
Insignificant officials
Find it best to frolic in old age.
Clear, pure, idle living
Is best enjoyed in poverty.
I have found something
Within the precious wine-cup;
There is no dust now
On my crane-feather clothes.
I take off my girdle,
Discard court garments,
Remove hairpins
Exchanged for a peasant's cap.
Fame and rank
Appear to have belonged to one
During another existence.
Yesterday, and again this day, at seventy easy free. Many old places I pass I seem to have thought of in former lives. Impermanent officialdom best for frolics when you're old, clear pure idle living when you're poor. There's something inside the precious wine-cup, there's no dust on my crane feather clothes. I take off the girdle put away Court garments remove the hairpins change into a peasant's turban. Fame and rank? That belongs to a man in another life. |
