Spring waters flood the wide pond;
Schools of fish swim at pleasure.
Green forest-leaves throw wide shadows;
All birds sing with joy.
Now I, too, living without illness or care,
Feel utterly light-hearted.
Fish and bird differ from man
But agree in that each
Accords with his own nature.
Long ago a pheasant
On the mountain bridge
Made sage Confucius sigh.
When he pondered on his fate and time,
He sighed for what lay beyond his reach.
Now I, on the contrary,
Face birds and fish
With pleasure and song.
Yew, I'm the lucky one
In time and place,
With such ample good fortune
In a single lifetime!
Spring waters fill the wide pond, flocks of fish swim as they please. The new forest green makes shadows, the birds all sing with joy. A time I also feel light-hearted, being without ailment or care. Fish and birds differ from man but we're alike in that each reverts to its own nature. In ancient time the pheasant on the mountain bridge made the sage Confucius sigh— Yes what a sage couldn't get made him sigh about his fate and times. Now I face fish and birds with pleasure in my song. Yes I've gotten both time and place— such good fortune in one lifetime! |
