A casual viewer
Feels only Autumn's fiery heat;
Inwardly the contest of warmth and cold
Turns toward fall.
On a single night
Come storm-wind and tempest.
In rapid sequence
Heat and cold shift places.
Slowly the hot breeze retires;
Gradually cool wind fans the air.
Suddenly pillow and mat
Grow cool and firm.
Soon turbans and dresses
Turn light and firm,
An old man inhales autumn
While heart and body
Rest wholly at ease.
When I awake I rub my face
Scratch my head,
Roll up the blind,
Enjoy the pond-side bamboos,
Lonely and forlorn as a priest at home,
Look down to watch fish at play,
Gaze up to observe a floating cloud.
Whether busy or idle,
I am equally rewarded.
But ah, if I might only
See you again.—
Yesterday I heard the news
That you have been summoned to the royal palace.
To all appearances the fiery heat has not retreated but from within autumn's joined the fray. One night comes the wind and rain, heat and cool change places several times. Leisurely the hot scene passes, gradually the cool breeze fans. Pillow and mat of a sudden cool and clear, turban and dress also light and firm. And old man takes in the autumn, heart and body much at ease. Enough sleep, I stretch out scratch my head rub my face. Rolling up the blind to see the bamboos by the pond, lone-forlorn like a priest at home. Looking down I see fish at play, looking up I see floating clouds. Idle or busy, both of interest but, oh, to see each other again! Yesterday I heard the news that you've been summoned to the royal palace. |
