With a firm body I have outwardly no shame;
With a tranquil mind I have inwardly no care.
When night arrives I am freshly bathed;
Skin and hair are comfortable and soft
I throw the loose-fitting cover over my head,
Wear a long outer garment of thick cotton,
My legs wrapped in warm bedclothes,
A warm hat covering my head.
First I enjoy a cup of wine,
Next I sip a pot of rice gruel
I'm half-tipsy, half-full; my four limbs
Become warmly exhilarated with the sensation of spring.
This month the year comes to its close;
Heaven and Earth are cold, bitter, sad.
The white sun itself is chilly and obscure;
The yellow river frozen; it no longer flows.
Somewhere someone marches on an expedition;
One traveller is violently restrained, another starved.
Still another lies frozen in a lampless jail.
They struggle bitterly to maintain life.
While I follow my nature without a care!
My heart is comforted, yet I feel ashamed—
Does anyone know the reason?
Frame right, outwardly no shame; heart tranquil, inwardly no care. Night comes— newly bathed skin and hair comfortable and soft. I put a loosely made lined cap on my head, wear bedclothes long and white made of thick cotton. Bedclothes warm enwrap my legs, warm cap covers my head. First I have a cup of wine, next I take a pot of rice gruel. Half tipsy half full my four limbs exhilarated with that spring feeling. This month the year at a close heaven and earth bitter cold sad. White sun cold no glow, yellow river flows not, frozen. Somewhere someone is marching in an expedition, someone is travel-restrained. Someone else starved along the route, another in a cold lampless jail. They struggle bitterly for life, while I pursue my nature without care. Comforted at heart but feeling shame— does anyone know the reason? |
