Last night I dreamt of Meng-te.
When I woke
My thoughts were flurried.
Forgetting that you have arrived at the Ju Commandery,
I imagined you as still in Suchow.
That is a thousand miles from here
But since I see you only in dreams,
What difference
Whether you are far or near?
Dreams equalize distance
As enlightenment
Equalizes glory and decay.
Nowadays how are you eating and sleeping?
Are you well once more?
Do you still sing?
Do you still become tipsy
When spring arrives?
How do your new house and landscape
Compare with home and scenery in Suchow?
When you think of me
Please send word!
Do not become too indolent to write!
Last night I dreamt of Meng-te and when I woke flurried my thoughts. I forgot you'd come to Ju Commandery, thought you were still in Suchow. Suchow is a thousand miles, Ju Commandery less than a hundred. But since I only see you in dreams what's the difference far or near? Dreams equalize distance the way glory and decay are one and the same. How are you eating and sleeping these days? Getting over illness do you still sing? And when spring comes do you still get tipsy? How does where you are rate with Suchow in edifice and scene? When you think of me send me news, don’t be too lazy to write. |
