All my friends are gone.
With anxiety and sorrow I strove to reach them
Through thoughts in a dream. Last night I saw
Those closest to me throughout an entire lifetime.
All that happened in my dream
Swept by my pillow in no time at all!
We relished a few cups of wine,
Contentedly played a game of chess.
First I saw Wei of the Secretariat,
His gold and purple sash brightly shining;
Second, I met the Worthy Attendant Li
Whose laughing words convinced me of his reality;
Finally there was Perpetual Attendant Ts'ui,
Whose looks and feelings stirred me so deeply.
Three such scenes in one night, but my dreaming heart
Was not startled in the least!
Something about all this
Common people find strange
Since they fail to grasp its principle.
But I am aware of the principle
Since I have received it from the Heavenly Master.
Violating wisdom, we make false distinctions
Between true and false, right and wrong.
He who converts sensation to wisdom
Attains religious All-Knowing."
My friends having all perished, in worry grief I strove to reach them through dream thoughts. Last night in dreams I saw those closest to me for a lifetime. The things that happened in the dream passed by my pillow in no time at all. We delighted in a few cups of wine, contented played a game of chess. First I saw Wei of the Secretariat, gold seal and purple sash shining bright. Then I met Attendant-Worthy Li, his laughing words natural real-to-life. Finally there was Constant-Attendant Ts'ui, his looks and feelings deeply moved. Three changes in one night but my dream heart not startled in the least. This is something people find strange, for of the principle all are unaware. But I am aware of this principle for I heard it from the Heaven Master. "We make false distinctions, thereby impairing our wisdom, deluded by the right and the wrong. But if we convert sensations to wisdom then we attain to religious All-Knowing." |
