In April the pond's waters are full;
Turtles disport themselves, fish leap;
I delight in my pond
And have built a shelter beside it.
Although men and fish differ in species,
Their joys are alike.
So may you and I as friends
Pass our days in pleasure together.
Entrusting yourself to rush and reed,
You do not envy the vast ocean;
I, too, forget the green clouds,
Finding a thatched hut
Sufficient shelter for my limbs.
You and I are not
In the category of the flood-dragon.
Should cloud and tempest arrive,
Well, we are just natives of the pond.
In the fourth month full the pond's waters, turtles at play and leaping fish. I love my pond and build a room alongside. Different in species are men and fish but their joy reverts to the one. So may you and I as friends pass the days in pleasure joined. You don't envy the great ocean, you entrust yourself to rush and reed. I too forget the green clouds, a grass hut sufficient to shelter my knees. You and I we're not in the class of the flood-dragon, if the clouds and rain arrive we're just things within a pond. |
