Where can we escape the heat?
The tower in the forest
Turns its back on the sun.
Where can we pursue the shade?
Surely in a boat that follows the breeze on the pond.
When the sun is high, I'm almost starved,
Then I first really commence to eat
And having eaten to the full
Continue to enjoy myself until I sleep.
Awaking from my nap, I sip a bowl of tea.
With eager eyes I study the green mountains.
Hearing the stream's jade current,
I take off my socks and idly wash my feet.
I remove my turban and happily scratch my head.
How long have I lived in this fashion?
Six or seven autumns already.
My spirit's free to the last bone in my body;
My fate has been to retreat foolishly,
Honor and glory unsought.
Yes, the world may laugh at me
But I've no external cares.
Don't think my words strange
But quietly consider
That I, too, am grieved
For in the heat of summer
You, Intendant Yang, have been sent
In demotion to Ch'ien-chou.
Where to avoid the heat? A tower in the forest, its back to the sun. Where to pursue the shade? In a boat, following the breeze on the pond. Sun-high and starved, then first I eat; eating ended and full, still I frolic. Frolicking ended I sleep a bit, awake and there's a bowl of tea. Eyes clear I see the green mountains, ears alert I hear the jade flow. I remove my stockings, idly wash my feet in the stream; I remove my turban, happily scratch my head. How long have I been like this? Six or seven autumns have passed. Free I am from my heart to the last bone in my body, foolish retreat my fate, honor glory unsought. Yes the world may laugh at me, but I've no external cares. Don't think my words strange but quietly consider that I too am grieved that in the heat of summer you, Intendant Yang, have been sent in demotion to Ch'ien-chou. |
