Listless I sit, grieving for you and grieving for myself;
Of my hundred ailing years how many are left?
Deng You had no sons, and accepted his fate,
Pan Yue lost a wife, and lavished poetry on her.
What hope can I have in the dark of our common grave-mound?
It is hard to imagine reunion in that other life.
All night I shall lie with unclosed eyes
To repay you for a lifetime of furrowed brows.
