We hurry to the prefect's without pausing to rest
in the middle of the night we look out our doors
the sky is still full of stars
lanterns are flickerings next door
we tie our horses and rush to wake the dawn
and lower the curtains to keep out the cold
my pitiful fellow officials
think of the hardships of those below us
