A famous wise man
never bulit a fire in his hearth
another one, it's said
never sat long enough to warm his mat
so here's one hungry, foolish man
who's following their example
it seems I just can't settle
in one place
when I arrived
among these mountains
I reveled in their remoteness
and thought, "I'll rest here quietly"
but now my situation
whether I like it or not
will have me make another trip
that's four in just one year!
I leave this obscure place
with real regret
set out with great uncertainty
on yet another journey
I stop my horses
amid the clouds by Dragon Pool
one last time I admire
the rocks of Tiger Cliff
here where the road forks
friends have come to say farewell
I take their hands in turn
tears brim in my eyes
not that we've had a long acquaintance
leading to deep friendship
but more that an old man
falls easily into sadness
this seemed like a perfect place
for a clumsy, lazy man like me
an ideal place in many ways
to be a hermit
I do not want to leave
I do not want to stay
I turn with shame to watch
the birds among the branches.
