most of them gather firewood
bring it home
sell it for a pittance
to make ends meet.
Even in old age
they wear their hair in virgin's braids
adorn it with leaves and flowers
fastened with silver hairpins
use up their strength in climbing
bringing great bundles back to market
or they make extra money
with risky work at the salt wells
makeup and ornaments
don't conceal the tear-tracks
thin clothes, barren fields
cold, desolate foothills
these Wu mountain women
are reputed to be ugly
but how come a famous beauty
was born not far from here?
