We climb the hills
to watch for beacon fires at daylight;
We water our horses
by the Jiao River at twilight.
The guard strikes the hour
as a sandstorm brings darkness;
The Princess with her pi-pa
was once left in a sorry plight.
No city wall's seen for ten thousand miles ─
in the wild only clouds floating atop,
Rain and snow keep pouring down
mingling with the vast desert non-stop.
Dolefully Tartar geese honk,
as they fly by night after night;
While the Tartars' tears fall drop by drop.
I heard passage through Jade Pass is still banned:
Warriors must risk their lives
behind the light chariot in command.
Year after year, bones of the fallen
lie buried in the wild:
Only to have Tartar grapes
brought to the Palace of Han.
