When parted by death we overcome our grief;
When parted in life our sadness is always with us.
South of the Yangzi is a pestilential place;
There’s no news from you in your banishment.
$Your spirit$ has come to me in a dream, my friend ‒
It shows how I am always thinking of you.
I am afraid it is not a living person's spirit
For it has come an immeasurably long way.
When your spirit set out the maple leaves were green;
When your spirit went back the passes were black with night.
At the moment you are caught in a net,
So how did you find the wings to fly?
The light of the setting moon fills the roof-beams ‒
I still imagine if s shining on your face.
The waters are deep, and the waves are wide;
Be sure a water dragon doesn't get you!
