Alone among the flowers with a jug of ale
I pour a drink, no friend for company.
I lift my cup and invite the bright moon along
And together with my shadow we make three.
The moon does not know how to drink; what’s more,
My shadow tags behind me aimlessly –
But moon and shadow keep me company for now –
It is spring, and we must make the most of it!
I sing, and the moon goes rolling back and forth;
I dance, and my shadow is all over the place.
When I am sober we have a good time together,
But once I am drunk we go our separate ways –
Eternally pledged to roam dispassionately,
Destined to meet far away in the starry sky.
