Orioles’ cries and the chatter of swallows
announce that New Year is here;
How many thousand miles long are the roads
to Horse Town and Dragon Mound?
My home is in the capital city,
close to the royal Han gardens,
But my heart goes out with the brilliant moon,
there to the Tartar skies.
I’ve woven a brocade with words
that express my never-ending longing
While up by my room the branches of blossoms
smile at me sleeping alone.
I have a question for General Dou,
commander of the cavalry:
When will you carve your triumphs on
Mount Swallow, and bring your men home?
