There are no waves by the little island –
there is no mist either;
Travelling in Chu I think of you,
fading gradually into the distance.
Above the mouth of the river Han
birds cross the evening sun
And the autumn waters of Dongting lake
stretch out to meet the sky.
A cold bugle blows from a solitary wall
set against mountain ranges;
By the lonely fort beside the river
I moor my boat for the night.
Jia Yi memorialized the throne,
concerned for the house of Han,
And when he was banished to Changsha
he was pitied, then as now.
No mist round the island and no waves breaking; Memories of the exile from Chu add an impalpable sadness. In the sunset over Han birds pass wheeling; The autumn waters of Dongting join the remote sky. Horns are blown in the cold in a solitary hill-town; My boat is moored tonight by a lonely river-outpost. Disquieted about the Han fortunes,Jia Yi sent up memorials, But was banished to Changsha, an object of pity to all the ages. |
