The gulls play on the frigid river banks;
Vainly they live, they please themselves with pranks.
The day was when their snow-white feathers flapped,
Over the spring seedlings they freely tapped.
When in swarm the swarthy clouds come they must fall,
Or sway along here and there with the squall.
But over the sea there are groups making fun,
While silhouetting against the glowing sun.
