Middle age - I grow somewhat fond of the Way,
my evening home at the foot of the southern hills.
When moods come I follow them alone,
to no purpose learning fine things for myself,
going till I come to where the river ends,
sitting and watching when clouds rise up.
By chance I meet an old man of the woods;
we talk and laughㅡ we have no "going-home" time.
Since middle age I've been a most enthusiastic Buddhist now that I'm old I've settled here in the mountain country sometimes I get so happy I have to go off by myself there are marvelous places I alone know about I climb to the source of a stream and sit to watch the rising mists sometimes I come across an old man of the woods we talk and laugh and forget to go home. Middle age—I grow somewhat fond of the Way, $(my)$ evening home at the foot of southern hills. When moods come I follow them alone, to no purpose learning fine things for myself, going till I come to where the river ends, siting and watching when clouds rise up. By chance I meet an old man of the woods; we talk and laugh—we have no "going-home" time. In middle life I became immersed in the philosophy of Tao; Later I went to live at the foot of South Mountain... When I am happy I walk alone in the hills. I know within my heart what is good and which is beautiful. When I arrive at the source of the stream I sit down to rest and to watch the mists rising. Sometimes I meet a time-worn woodcutter— Talking and laughing together, we forget it is time to go home! |

中年（ちゅうねん）のころから、いささか仏教（ぶっきょう）を好（この）み、晩年（ばんねん）になって終南山（しゅうなんざん）のかたほとりに山荘（さんそう）をかまえた。気（き）が向（む）けば、いつもひとりで出（で）かけ、そこの美（うつく）しい景色（けしき）を味（あじ）わう楽（たの）しみは、自分（じぶん）だけが知（し）っていてほかに知（し）る人（ひと）はいない。
山荘（さんそう）のあたりを歩（ある）き回（まわ）って水（みず）の流（なが）れの尽（つ）きるところにまでたどり着（つ）き、そこに座（すわ）って雲（くも）のわき起（お）こる折（おり）のようすを見守（みまも）る。たまたま思（おも）いもかけず山林（さんりん）の長老（ちょうろう）に出（で）あったりすれば、うちとけて談笑（だんしょう）し、帰（かえ）る時期（じき）など忘（わす）れてしまうのだ。
