How bitter the notes sound again and again,
And drops of blood the players's garment stain!
The other day you will be sad e'en more,
When soldiers are back as skeletons and gore.
We meet, and may regret the time to part,
So you croon the flute with a melting heart.
Can't I see the sorrowing clouds flowing,
But I feel the lamenting winds soughing!
