英譯: |
Let my west neighbour come to my cottage garden and beat
Dates down from the trees, since sonless, she has nothing to eat.
Would she ever do that if it's not Poverty pressing behind?
So, sparing her from shyness, you must be gentle and kind.
There is no need of her shrinking from you — my lodger from afar,
And it would be too callous to hurdle her out, to make a bar.
She has complained that taxes have made her poor to the bone,
And my tears wet my kerchief as I think war fires still burn.
Let my neighbor to the west pick the dates from the trees out front she's a poor woman, no children, not much food on her table if she were better off she wouldn't need to raid my trees we try not to embarrass her we look the other way, in pity I know you've come a long way and I don't wish to interfere but putting a fence up, for example, would be a bit too much she's told me the taxation has skinned her to the bone what war does to people! oh, this world makes me weep. |
