I've oft been vexed by the sand-bank sliding with my herb plant,
And built the riverside pavilion the current to prevent.
How I wish the young pines would grow up a thousand feet in height;
How I want to cut down ten thousand bamboos vile with blight!
For the means of my livelihood I rely on Your Excellency,
My declining health wants elixir with repellency.
I'm only skin and bones since I ran before riots for three years,
Now I believe that the way of the world is hard with fears.
