Let my west neighbour come to my cottage garden and beat
Dates down from the trees , since she has no son , has nothing
to eat .
Would she ever do that if it's not Poverty pressing behind ?
So , sparing her from shyness , you must be gentle and kind .
There is no need of her shrinking from you— my lodger
from afar ,
And it would be too callous to hurdle her out , to make a bar .
She has complained that taxes have made her poor to the
bone ,
And my tears wet my kerchief as I think war fires still burn .
