Desolation of an abandoned city
Void of a thousand miles of river and hill
Far up in the sky an autumn sun
Cries of wild geese that return
Withered grass gleaming on the wintry bank
Last paulownia littering the courtyard
With this the evening of the year is come
And I look at it all and hum 'The Sad Old Man'—
My friend is not to be seen there
East of the desolate forest vast on the plain.
Deserted city, bleak, all by itself. A million miles, mountains and rivers void. The sky high, autumn sun distant. Piercing cries, flights of homeward geese. Cold pond mirrors withering grass. Halls dwarf scattering sycamores. In face of dusking years. And one's shadow: a song of the sad old man. Friends can no longer be seen. Loneliness is east of the level forest. |
