Since I left Wei State
To become tutor to the Crown Prince
I've lived at leisure, in pure idleness,
Through eight or nine springs.
At first I was regarded
As a heedless old man,
But more recently, reconsidering,
They've dubbed me a recluse.
I have memorized
The common ways of the world,
Feelings, warm and cold.
I leave entirely to my friends
Distinctions between right and wrong.
Best to place a foolish dullard like myself
Beyond bounds of law and regimentation.
Since I left Wei State to become tutor to the Crown Prince I've live at leisure on idle ground for eight or nine springs. At first I was eyed as the heedless old man but of late they call me "the Recluse." I've committed to memory the common ways of the world, its sentiments now cold, then warm; the right and wrong of being idle, that I'll leave to my friends.
