For seven or eight years
I revelled in Loyang.
Of every three of my jolly companions
Two or more have gone.
Virtually all remaining is this old man
To enjoy the fresh breeze surrounding him,
The moon above him,
The garden about him.
How preposterous to belabor one's heart
With worldly affairs, wealth or eminence!
Life's secret lies in pleasure and enjoyment.
Who now, as I sit in idleness,
Can call upon me
To share sweet singing and the wine-jug?
For seven or eight years a Loyang frolicker; of every three frolicking companions two are no more. Before the breeze, below the moon, within the flower garden, everywhere all that remains, this one old man. For worldly things to labor one's heart, that's neither wealth nor eminence; the real thing in life is to delight and joy. Who can call on me to idly sit, sharing sweet songs and the wine-jug?
