My place is at the mouth of the valley
beyond tall trees
around an empty village
you came down that stony road
for nothing
no one to meet you
at my cottage
fishing boats were stuck
on the frozen riverbank
a hunting fire was burning on the plain
the night was white
and silent
only the howls of gibbons
and a far-off temple bell.
I live humbly beside a mountain pass. Tall trees encircle the deserted village... Alas! To think you wasted your time travelling back and forth over this stony path! When again will anyone wait before my door? My fishing boat is iced fast in the frozen river; And below on the frigid plain a hunter's fire burns. Beyond bank up white clouds... I hear only the faint tolling of a bell and the eerie cry of monkeys in the night. |
