Once as I sauntered through the village
Carrying wine for a new guest,
By chance I turned my carriage around
To call on Hsüeh Lo.
Just then snow began to fall
So that we comforted each other.
Some warm day next spring
I'll pass by this way again—
The old man lives at the foot of the mountain,
Aging and uninvolved.
I am much involved in the world's affairs.
Like me, my friend, you are an old man
With hair like snow,
But you lack food and clothing.
What can be done about it?
Chancing to take along wine to seek out the village guest, then turning my carriage round to call on Hsüeh Lo. Snow's coldness just then, we comfort each other, and I'll pass by again during spring's warmth. The old man lives below the mountain, emptily aging; I am much involved with things of the world.
