Without a neighbor at my side
I climb to the top
Of this perilously high pavilion.
I gaze over a spring landscape
Of three thousand worlds
But feel only emptiness.
Though all knowledge is lost,
Together with all measurement of height,
Here is not a single obstruction.
Turning back to look,
I see three official highways,
In the far distance
A speck of dust, the Capital.
Only a few guests arrive,
Remaining with me scarcely half a day.
Hardly once in a lifetime
Do princes and dukes
Come to such a place.
Now I first realize
That Heaven made this scene
Of emptiness and idleness
For neither the busy nor the rich.
To the top of that perilously high pavilion, neighbors none. I look out at a spring encompassing 3,000 worlds. But I feel the emptiness, not a single obstruction, lose all knowledge of height and measure. Turning back to look I see three official roads, there in the distance the capital a speck of dust. A few guests arrive but with me not even half a day— princes and dukes come to such a place not even once in a lifetime. Then first I realize that Heaven made the empty idle place not for the busy, not for the rich. Without a neighbor at my side I climb to the top Of this perilously high pavilion.
