The Gorge of Pa we reached at early dawn.
Late Spring my heart has back to Ch'ang-an borne.
One woman washes by the current bright.
With songs the birds all hail the growing light.
In realms of water here to market go
In boats the people. Where deep gullies show,
We walk on bridges past the tops of trees;
While, as one climbs, one endless vistas sees
That spring to view; and gazing far and wide
Notes the clear stream in doubled torrent glide.
The people's speech is strange; and strange their ways:
The oriole's trill unchanged from ancient days.
So much of lovely scenery here combined
Helps ease the smart for joys left far behind.

Just at dawn I set off for Pa Pass With the last of spring I remembered the capital In the bright river a woman was washing With the morning sun all the birds sang Water country, markets on boats Mountain bridges up among the tree tops I climbed and hundreds of villages emerged And in the distance two rivers shone The people spoke a peculiar dialect But the orioles sounded as in my own country And luckily I know about landscape And that abated my feeling of isolation. |
