The fifth watch is come; and the water clock's sound
Is urging the arrows of dawn.
The Fairy Peach flush on the cheek of the Spring
O'er the nine-folded city is borne.
The dragons and serpents o'er banners and flags
All writhe in the heat of the day.
O'er halls of the Palace on light zephyr wings
The swallows are flying away.
In coils round the sleeves yet the incense smoke clings
Long after the audience ends.
And Pearl drops and Jade the soft pencil lets fall
As the Muse in complacency bends.
Why graciously mild the Imperial words
Through inherited medium flow,
It is that its offspring the phœnix has left
To float on the waters below.
